ÉTIENNE (STEVE) FORTIN

Étienne (Steve) Fortin passed away suddenly after a brief illness in Yuma, AZ on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 in his 80th year, beloved husband of Adele Fortin

He was predeceased by Denise Fortin (née Desrosiers) and Jeannette Fortin (née McKinnon).

Steve was a father to five children, Diane Fortin, Carole Armstrong, Claude Fortin, Jacqueline Pineau, Colette Fortin and step-father to Christopher Woollett. Steve had 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. We all miss him so much.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Ste Anne Catholic Church, Ste Anne, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

MARY LAUZON
Dec. 24, 1929-June 1, 2011

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and sister, Mary Lauzon. She died peacefully with her family at her bedside.

She leaves to mourn four children, Henry Lauzon from Edmonton, Patricia Lauzon from British Columbia, Monica Hall from Huntsville, ON and Ed Lauzon from Winnipeg; three grandchildren, James Hall, Jacob Hall and Jordon Lauzon; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Wiebe (Cornie) and Jeanette Wiebe (Peter), both from Winnipeg.

She was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Mary Wiebe from Lowe Farm, MB, her brothers Cornie, Peter and Jacob Wiebe, and her sisters Susie Wallbank, Justina Kiehn and Tina Wiebe.

The family wishes to thank everyone at the Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton, AB for their kindness and caring for Mary.


JOHN PERSOWICH

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Persowich Sr. on June 2, 2011 at the Vita Hospital in Vita, Manitoba.  John was born in Sirko, Manitoba to Harry and Anna Persowich on April 15, 1922. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marion in 1991, brothers Bill and Peter, and sister Sophie.  He was also predeceased by his son-in-law, Jim Johnston and daughter-in-law, Wendy Persowich.

He is lovingly remembered and survived by his children, Christina (Alex) Anonychuk, John Jr. (Joyce)Persowich, Judy Johnston, Patricia Persowich, Jacqueline (Robert) Lewandiwsky, Gary (Bonnie)Persowich, Irene (Jan) Collins, EdwardPersowich, and one sister, Mary Boychuk.  He was also the beloved Gido to 19 grandchildren and 8 great grand-children. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Elias Ukrainian Orthodox Church.  

Viewing was held on Tuesday, June 7th, 2011 2:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. prayers were said at 7:00 p.m. at the Vita Funeral Home, Vita, Manitoba. 

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Elias Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Sirko, Manitoba with the interment in the church cemetery.

JOEY PENNER

Joey Penner, 19, of Blumenort, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2011, accidentally near his home.

He is survived by his parents, Boyd and Martha, his mother Brenda Friesen, three sisters, and three brothers.

The funeral will take place Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at the Blumenort EMC at 2:00 p.m.. A visitation and gathering of friends will take place at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at 7:30 p.m.

MAURICE SPORTAK

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Maurice Sportak at the age of 78, on June 4, 2011, after a brief period of illness.

Maurice was predeceased by his parents, Helen and Matthew; Brothers John (Gertie) and Willie (Diane); Sisters Mary (Bill) and Agnes (George). Left to cherish his memory are his Brothers Joseph and Paul (Ann); Twin Sister Sr. Daria and Sisters Rose (Wm) and Anne (Bill) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on Friday, June 10th at 10:00am. His Grace, Most Reverend Emeritus Bishop Michael Bzdel C.S.S.R. will be presiding.

HELEN LOEWEN

Helen P Loewen (Friesen) was born on October 31, 1926; at home in the St Anne municipality. Her parents were John and Gertrude Friesen. She was the third youngest of 12 children. She married John P Loewen of Blumenort on October 9, 1949. Five sons and three daughters were born to Mom and Dad. One daughter, Florence, was abruptly taken from them through a farming accident in 1955.

She leaves to mourn her passing and to carry on her legacy of love for Jesus: son John and Maria of Stratton, ON and children Jonathan and Liudmila (Dalia and Etienne), Priscilla and Mark (Reuel and Micaiah), David and Sara, Hannah, Esther, Joanna, Tabea, and Asenath, son Arley and Janice of Blumenort and daughters Rachel and Rebecca, daughter Marian and Peter Redekopp of Crystal City, MB, son Cliff and Pauline of Blumenort and children Chris, Michelle, and Heather, daughter Junia of Winnipeg, son Dale and Cori of Steinbach, MB, and children Jackson, Davis, Weston, and Texas, and son Glenn and Maribeth of Portage, MB and children Christian, Anicka, Marcus, and Natasha.

KURT OSTER

Kurt Oster, Age 70, passed away on June 6, 2011 at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach.

Kurt was born on November 23, 1940 in Rochlitz in the German province of Saxon.

He is survived by his mother, Ella Oster; two sisters, Ilse Krentz Ens (Phil) and Nell Loewen (Ken); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Rudolf Oster; two brothers, Wilfred and Edmund; as well s by his brother-in-law Reg Krentz.

Albert K. Friesen, loving husband to Elisabeth, and our dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa, passed away Monday, June 6, at Bethesda Hospital after a brief illness. He was 89 years old. He is survived by his wife of almost 51 years, Elisabeth, nine children: Wilbert (Hilda), Florence, Dennis (Louella), Elda (Roger Borse), Leona (Mike Kroeker), Ray, Corinne (Rick Loewen), Louise (Peter Dueck), Jim (Rhonda); Grandchildren, Dale & Char, Patrick & Trudy, Mo & Karen, Kerri & Sheldon, Joelle & Aaron, Andrew, Shannon & Grant, Mike & Marina, Andrea, David, Joel & Heather, Derek & Issa, Donovan & Crystal, Chad & Gabrielle, Benjamin, Jessica, Erik, Emma, Matthew, Laura, and Sarah; Great-grandchildren, Jared, Jesse, Lucas, Levi, Kirsten, Hannah, Adriana, Cameron, Adam, Jareth, Nicole, Jason, Leyton, Alfie, Ron, and Elise. He is also survived by six siblings, and numerous in-laws. Dad was predeceased by his first wife Annie, one infant son, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 10, at 2:00 p.m. at the Steinbach Evangelical Mennonite Church. Interment will be at the Kleefeld EMC cemetery. DENNIS MAGEL

Dennis Magel, age 77 years of Vita, Manitoba formerly of Piney, Manitoba passed away on June 11, 2011 at the Vita Hospital, Vita, Manitoba with his son Jackson and nurses by his side.

He was predeceased by his mother, two sons and his common law wife.

Dennis is survived by one son, one step daughter, two step sons, one granddaughter, ex-wife, one sister, one brother and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Dennis will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011 – 1:00pm at Vita Funeral Home Vita, Manitoba.

It is with sadness yet peace that the Nelson Friesen family announces the passing of Anne Friesen ( Reimer) age 71 at the St Pierre Hospital on June 12,2011.

Anne cherished her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, but most of all she loved and cherished her Saviour, Jesus Christ!

She is lovingly remembered by her husband Nelson, her children Randy ( Alvina) Friesen, Linda ( Ernie) Schroeder, Lana ( Myron) Dyck, Rod ( Shirley) Friesen, 15 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.

Anne was predeceased by her daughter Loreen, her brother Harold and her sister Martha.

The funeral service will take place on Thursday June 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Word of Life Mission Church in Niverville, Manitoba with viewing prior to the service. Interment will be at Hespeler Cemetery, Niverville.

Jacob Schapansky, 76, of Ile Des Chenes, passed away Monday, June 13, 2011, at his residence.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lena (nee Driedger); two sons: Gary (Kris), ON, Carl (Tammy), Garson, MB; one daughter Val (Steve) Belknap, Kansas; one daughter-in-law Helen, Niverville, MB; eight grandchildren; two sisters: Tina (Henry) Rempel, Winnipeg, Mary (Bill) Sawatzky, BC; one brother Herman (Margaret), BC; one brother-in-law Bernie Harder, Selkirk.

He was predeceased by his son Jim in 2009; parents Jacob & Maria; and one sister Margaret Harder.

The funeral will be held Friday, June 17, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sargent Ave Mennonite Church, Sargent & Garfield, Winnipeg, with interment at Grunthal Cemetery. Viewing will be at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr. Steinbach, on Thursday, June 16, at 7:00 p.m., with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. and at the church prior to the service.

HELENA FRIESEN

Peacefully on Wednesday June 15, 2011, at Bethesda Place in Steinbach, Manitoba. Helen passed away at the age of 95 years.

Helen leaves to mourn her passing, her daughters, Erma Friesen, Irene (Patrick) Boenders and Bernice (David) Krahn; her six grandchildren Aubrey (Perry) Giesbrecht, Meghan (Nathan) Eidse, Vanessa Krahn, Michael, Justin and Nathan Boenders. She also leaves to mourn one brother-in-law, John Peters, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Erdman, in 2000 as well as all nine of her siblings.

The family would like to give a special thanks to all of the staff at Bethesda Place for the 12 years of dedicated service in making her stay there comfortable.

Funeral service was held on Monday, June 20 at 2:00 p.m. at the Niverville Community Fellowship Church, Niverville, MB, with interment at Hespeler Cemetery, Niverville.

March 11, 1927 to June 15, 2011

Melvin passed away peacefully at the Altona Hospital, on Wednesday, June 15, 2011.

Melvin was predeceased by his loving wife Gladys on February 23, 2007, his parents Oliver & Alma, 5 sisters and 6 brothers. Melvin is survived by his daughters Virginia Weiss & Brenda Sims; son-in-law Dennis Weiss; grandchildren Reishan & Curtis Weiss, Tyson Stevens & Joshua Anderson; great grandson Jaeger Weiss; sister-in-laws Winnie Morken, Lovina (Gilmore) Torkelson & Darlene (Richard) Culleton. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends and sorely missed by his loving companion Trigger.

Funeral Services was held on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Dominion City United Church.

KATHERINE DUECK

Peacefully, with family by her side, Mom passed away at the age of 91, at Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, on June 17, 2011.

She is survived by four sons: Norm, Robert (Judy), Randy (Kristina), Mel (Bev); two daughters: Carroll (Gerald) Dyck, and Lorna (Henry) Harms; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one sister Lena Barkman.

She was predeceased by her husband Abram A. Dueck in 1986. She was also predeceased by her parents, five brothers and five sisters.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Blumenort Evangelical Mennonite Church, with interment at the church cemetery Wednesday, June 22 at 11:00 a.m., prior to the service. ANNA FAST

Anna Fast (nee Olfert) age 102 years of age passed away peacefully with her families at her bedside at Bethesda Personal Care Home of Steinbach, Manitoba on Friday June 17th, 2011.

Anna was born November 8, 1908 at Wymark, Saskatchewan and was the 3rd child of 15. She was predeceased by her parents Franz and Elizabeth Olfert, her first husband Peter Giesbrecht after 47 years of marriage and her second husband George Fast after 16 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters and is survived by sisters Helen, Mary and Nettie and brother Jake. From her first marriage she was predeceased by sons Tony and Frank and daughter Norma and survived by daughter Barbara, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. From her second marriage she is survived by her step family, Harold and Nettie Fast, Milton and Gladys Fast, Henry Fast, Vern and Edith Fast, Grace and Clarence Kliewer, Ernie and Elfrieda Reimer and families.

The funeral service was held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Monday, June 20th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at Kleefeld EMC Cemetery.

Sadie Schellenberg, 83, of Steinbach, passed away Saturday, June 18th, 2011 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.

She is survived by 3 daughters, 2 sons, 3 sisters, 1 brother and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Cornelius F. Schellenberg.

The funeral service for Sadie Schellenberg will be held Wednesday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church, 479 Hanover, Steinbach, with burial at Rosengard Cemetery.

MATHILDA MEHLING

Mathilda Mehling, 96, of Steinbach, MB passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach.

They were blessed with a family of four sons and two daughters; Norman (Glorian), Mel (Joyce), Dennis (Phyllis), Shirley (Ernie), Lorne (Angie), and Brenda. She had 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

She is survived by one sister, Elsie Biedler, brother Rudolf (Lena) and one sister-in-law, Evelyn Krentz. She was predeceased by her husband Ferdinand on November 12, 1985, one sister, Ida Fender and one brother, Art Krentz, brothers-in-law Emmanuel Fender and Edward Biedler. She was predeceased by her parents Christof and Emilie Krentz.

The funeral will be held Thursday, June 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Steinbach.
A viewing service will be held at the St. Paul Lutheran Church on Wednesday, June 22 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. There will also be viewing prior to the funeral.

Donations may be made in Mathilda's memory to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
