Advanced polls draw more voters

There was a 35 percent increase in the number of ballots cast on Thursday at the advanced poll for the Hanover School Division trustee election compared to four years ago.

At total of 343 voters marked an ‘X’ for the candidates in the Steinbach ward. 254 people cast ballots at the advanced poll in 2010.

This year’s contest in Steinbach features more competitors. 11 candidates are vying to four seats on the board, up from five candidates in the previous election.

Yesterday’s advance poll, held at the school division administration office in Steinbach, was open to voters in all wards. Seven votes were cast by voters in the division’s west ward and two votes were cast by voters in the division’s south ward.

There was also an increase in voter turnout at the advanced polls for the Steinbach city council election. 317 voters cast ballots for council, which was an increase from 274 voters in 2010.
