Formal gowns are being collected and transformed into Angel Dresses that are being donated to hospitals across Manitoba; some of these dresses will be brought to Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach. For the volunteers who band together, it’s a labour of love and a gift for families grieving the loss of a newborn.

Penny Morrow volunteers her time to collect donations for the Steinbach area. She told The Carillon about the special little dresses.

“We turn these gowns into Angel dresses so that parents have one less thing to worry about if they have a miscarriage or a stillbirth,” Morrow explained. “Parents can get one of our dresses or wraps to bury their baby in.”

Morrow lost a baby last year due to a miscarriage. She found the grief to be consuming, making it difficult to continue with daily life.

“It was a really bad time,” she said. “I had six healthy kids, this would have been my seventh, and to have a miscarriage, it was a really dark time in my life. I basically quit work and lay on the couch doing nothing. I had a four year old child at home but I did nothing. I didn’t want to deal with life.”

Morrow believed the only way she could get out of that dark place was to help other people. She searched the internet for ideas to help other people and came across Manitoba Angel Dresses. Many women across the province band together to create beautiful outfits for angel babies.
