Steinbach city council decided a reduced 72-unit apartment plan for Hespeler Street South would not satisfy the neighbours who opposed the 120-unit proposal last year.

Although council was split 3-3 on giving first reading to allow a public hearing to proceed, the tie vote meant the motion was defeated.

In February 2013, council spiked the transformation of lots 415 and 431 from residential low density to residential medium density after facing ire from neighbours that the change would worsen the character of the neighbourhood.

“The plan, while it is somewhat different from the one we looked at (last) year, it’s more similar than different, and there were substantial objections from the neighbourhood, which I suspect will be very similar as last time,” said Michael Zwaagstra, who lead the motion to deny first reading.
