Clif Bakx is claiming he can be your “reeve for free.”

The RM of Hanover reeve candidate is pledging to give his first year of salary, if elected, to the “cash-strapped recreation committees in Hanover.”

To improve recreation funding, Bakx wants to increase net recreation funding by 10 percent each year, through to 2018. His plan is titled the 10-18 Initiative. He said his plan includes more components than just recreation.

Bakx said a reeve’s salary would come close to reaching the amount the RM commits to its five recreation committees each year.

The RM office said the reeve’s salary is $36,394.79.

“I don’t want to get a dime,” said Bakx. “Whatever you guys normally pay a reeve give it all to the rec committees.”

Municipal manager of finance and administration Don Dowle said Hanover is allocating approximately $825,000 in 2014 for recreation.

$495,000 of that is spent on current operating requirements. From that portion, $352,500 goes directly to the five recreation associations. The rest is earmarked to recreation administration, facility insurance, accounting services and minor capital facility repairs.

The remaining approximately $330,000 is either spent on capital improvements or put aside in recreational reserves.
