Two brothers from Steinbach with a history of drug-related arrests are in custody after police raided a city residence and found drugs and a prohibited weapon.

Trenten Sass, 26, and Shawn Sass, 22, were arrested yesterday after Steinbach RCMP’s general investigation unit obtained a search warrant to scour a residence on Penrose Crescent, police said in a release Friday night. RCMP seized prohibited weapons and items relating to the sale of controlled substances, including cocaine and currency.

Both individuals have been charged with possessing cocaine for trafficking, retaining the proceeds of crime and having a prohibited weapon.

The two brothers were arrested in Dec. 2014 when police charged the men and four others for involvement in a marijuana trafficking operation on Barkman Avenue. Sass’ youngest brother Cameron took responsibility for the marijuana, so the Crown would drop charges against both of his brothers, the Crown attorney said at a sentencing last May. The judge later surmised that Cameron took the fall for his older brothers.

Trenten has been convicted of drug possession for trafficking and a subsequent possession charge in 2012. Shawn was also sentenced for trafficking in 2012 and earlier that year for unlawfully being in a dwelling.
