What is believed to be one of the last wooden elevators to be built in Manitoba came crashing to the ground on Wednesday.
The Carey grain elevator, which has been out of service for numerous years but has since been used for storage, was demolished at 9:30 a.m. as some community members looked on.
The most recent owners of the bright red Pioneer elevator, James Richardson and Sons Ltd., conceded that with today’s farming realities, wooden structures like the one in Carey are being replaced by high-efficiency grain elevators.
Keeping the old relics standing presents a number of challenges, such as maintenance costs and liability concerns, they said.
The Carey elevator, located just north of PR 205 in the community, was situated alongside a rail track. Although the elevator had no rail access in later years, the line is still active.
The elevator is said to have been built a little more than 30 years ago.
