Carillon scores 11 provincial wins

The Carillon was recognized on the weekend as the best paper in its circulation class as part of the Better Newspaper Competition, an annual event of the Manitoba Community Newspapers Association.

The newspaper was handed a total of 11 awards, including general excellence awards for best editorial page in its circulation class and two second place finishes for layout and design as well as its front page.

Reporter Ian Froese came home as one of the most decorated journalists in the province. Froese won first place honours for best education story with his piece revealing the legal fight over the Esther Castanera scholarship. He also claimed two second place awards in the best First Nations coverage and best photo spread categories as well as a third place award in the best feature article on a business topic category.

Editor Grant Burr was recognized with a first place award for best editorial on a business topic for a piece written early last year which questioned the ability of Provencher MP Ted Falk to serve both as a politician and as a member of the Steinbach Credit Union board of directors.

The paper’s bimonthly agriculture section, Agriculture Now, harvested a first place award as the best ag section in the province.

Designer Janet Begalke-Smith was also recognized for her abilities with a third place award in the best advertisement category for an ad design for Oakridge Greenhouse.
