If Councillor Susan Penner gets her way, Steinbach families could soon spend more statutory holidays sliding, splashing, and swimming.

During council question period this week, Penner asked why the Steinbach Aquatic Centre was closed on Louis Riel Day—a holiday ostensibly designed for family leisure.

City manager Troy Warkentin noted the aquatic centre is only open during long weekend Mondays in July, August, and September, as well as Remembrance Day, which is not a statutory holiday. Warkentin explained dates were chosen when the city first developed its operating plan for the facility, and noted that many Winnipeg pools choose to close on statutory holidays.

“We’re providing the pool as a service to our community. Unfortunately, on the days that families are actually off [work], they don’t have access,” Penner said.

Mayor Chris Goertzen noted staffing and cost factors but asked city administrators to assess the policy and report back to council.
