Two men have been arrested after a violent encounter with police on Friday night.

On Friday night, shortly after 6 p.m., Steinbach RCMP members attempted to stop a truck and trailer on Fire Road 13, in the area where a stolen Bobcat excavator was reported. The driver of the truck fled the scene, eventually ramming a police vehicle being used as a roadblock.

A passenger in the vehicle, 40-year-old Ricky Coltman of Winnipeg, exited the vehicle and was arrested but the driver of the truck attempted to flee the scene again. Police said it reported the driver was in possession of a hand gun.

The vehicle was finally abandoned after becoming stuck. Police found dozens of rifle rounds inside the vehicle.

After a two hour search of the area, police found and arrested 42-year-old Shawn Verestiuk of the Winnipeg-area. A loaded semi-automatic rifle was also recovered, which police had observed being thrown from the truck.

Verestiuk and Coleman face charges including weapons possession, aggravated assault on a police officer and possession of property obtained by crime.
