In 2004, Farm Credit Canada started an annual food drive to support food banks across Canada. South East Helping Hands in Steinbach is one of many food banks benefiting from the efforts.

Nationally, FCC helped raise over 17 million pounds of food. In southeastern Manitoba, 210,900 pounds of food has been collected since 2008 and brought to seven food banks in the region.

This annual campaign often brings in enough food to last the food bank eight months though some food banks can make it last a full year.

South East Helping Hands feeds over 300 families and most of the people being helped are children.

The annual Pork on a Bun event is coming up on Friday at South East Helping Hands at 525 Main Street in Steinbach. It will run between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. with shelter provided incase it rains. Entertainment is also lined up with McKenzie Road and Trevor Johnson providing country music.

All funds raised at the event will go directly to the local food bank.
