As the temperature climbs toward normal for this time of year, the Red River is thawing with few problems. The crest reached Winnipeg on Tuesday at 19.17 feet, slightly elevated from the forecasted crest of 19 feet. Provincial officials say that is a result of a surge in flows along the river when the ice released south of Winnipeg.

Without any heavy rain, it is unlikely the floodway gates will see any action this spring. Water was naturally entering the floodway at a rate of 4,750 cubic feet per second Tuesday morning. This provided some flood protection benefit inside the city of Winnipeg.

A high water advisory is continued for streams in eastern Manitoba, east of the Red River and south of the Winnipeg River, due to a significant snow pack, an expected rapid rate of melt and the potential for ice jams and associated flooding.
