Steinbach firefighters were called to a house fire on Hanover Street shortly after 1 a.m. on Friday morning.

Fire chief Kel Toews said when crews arrived they found a fire in the basement of the residence. Toews said flames burned through the main floor and managed to get into the attic as crews worked to contain the blaze.

Toews said the house, which he described as a total loss, was unoccupied and had no active hydro or gas connections.
