“We sent in a couple crews but we found out fairly quickly that the floor was compromised,” said Steinbach fire chief Kel Toews. “In fact one crew had to evacuate out a window, conditions were worsening pretty quickly.”

Areas of floor collapsed soon afterward.

Steinbach firefighters, assisted by firefighters from La Broquerie and Giroux, remained on the scene for several hours containing the fire.

Toews said one family member was home at the time of the fire but was able to escape safely.

An investigator from the Office of Fire Commissioner was on the scene early Sunday morning to collect evidence.
