A teddy bear picnic on Sunday attracted many families to the La Broquerie Fire Hall for fun and games while Agape House staff spread the word on important resources available in the eastern region.

There were many games and water stations for children to enjoy while parents learned about the women’s shelter and the programs offered to victims of abuse.

“Awareness is the main goal of this event,” said Melissa Saindon, children’s counsellor. “We do a lot of promotion in Steinbach but not a lot in the little towns so I though it was a good opportunity to do that here.”

Children brought their teddy bears to a special station where they were carefully repaired. When the boo-boos were fixed, smiles and excitement resulted. There were also a lot of smiles from children crawling into the police car brought in by Steinbach RCMP. With the lights and sirens operated by little fingers, bright eyes lit up during this rare opportunity.

A yard sale took place at the same location with proceeds going toward Agape House.

Amidst the fun events and laughter, important information was shared with adults.

“A lot of people don’t know what Agape House does,” said Saindon. “So we were passing out pamphlets and explaining the resources to the public.”
