It’s being called modern day treasure hunting and it’s becoming popular around the world. Here in Steinbach, geocaching is alive and well with a number of caches to be found.

Madison Friesen is the program coordinator at the Jake Epp Library. She told The Carillon that there are 37 caches in Steinbach and throughout the Southeast.

“There is a lot of local interest,” Friesen said. “There were a couple of groups that came in this past month to use the kits (of geocaching devices). A lot of people have been downloading the app. on their smartphone because it’s an easier way.”

The library was given a kit of geocaching devices for the month of October with patrons allowed to use them for treasure hunting. Those units are being returned to Southern Health where people can continue to borrow them for fun adventures.

“Geocaching is also a great outdoor activity that’s fun for people of all ages.”

It’s also a great way to explore Manitoba.
