A long-time councillor in the RM of La Broquerie is seeking the reeve chair for the first time in his more than three-decade career.

Ward 1 representative Cornie Goertzen is hoping to succeed Claude Lussier as reeve.

Goertzen said he is only seeking the job because reeve Claude Lussier is stepping down.

“I said this was probably the best time for me to run,” said Goertzen. “Council in the last four years has worked very well and there’s good cooperation all around.”

Around nine years ago, Lussier moved to La Broquerie with his wife Therese. He is planning to return to Quebec where he worked for more than 27 years in agricultural economics.

Goertzen was first elected as a councillor in 1980. He remained in office except for a small blip from 2006-2010 when he was defeated.

If Goertzen, along with his son Chris, mayor of Steinbach, are elected, the father and son will be two of the highest-profile politicians in the Southeast. The Goertzen’s are so far the only individuals in their respective races.

“He’s quite OK with [me running], and I’m very OK that he has his name in the race,” said Cornie Goertzen, who has five children and 16 grandchildren. “The two of us work together quite a bit. We have some property here where we live and Chris has his cattle here and as much as I can I help look after that.”

The election is Oct. 22.
