The school bus doesn’t have to pick up your child at home this fall.

A proposal passed by the Hanover School Division board will let parents designate an alternate drop-off and pick-up location for their children.

The division wants to give rural parents more flexibility and support.

“This is a direct response to parents’ requests,” said assistant superintendent Rick Ardies. “There was an interest from parents for us to support babysitting and daycare arrangements.”

There are some limits to the program. They include that the alternate location must be along an existing bus route, the student must live in a bus-eligible zone and parents can only select one alternate location.

In the past HSD required students be dropped off and picked up at their residence.

Ardies estimates 10-20 students may utilize the new option in the first year.

Parents who want more information can contact the Hanover School Division’s transportation department.
