Traffic is once again moving across the Red River on the east side of Morris after the completion of major upgrades to the bridge crossing on Highway 23.

Transportation minister Steve Ashton said in a release that the $32 million investment has extended the lifespan of the bridge by another 40 years. It was originally built in 1968.

The province says the new structure will be one of the province’s “smart bridges” with a monitoring system installed in its concrete deck which will relay information to engineers about its structural stability.

Ashton said the work is part of the province’s $5.5 billion core infrastructure plan, which is supported by last year’s provincial sales tax increase.
