Turns out, the first baby to ring in the new year in southeastern Manitoba had her grand arrival in the comfort of her home.

Alaya Joy was introduced 11 minutes after the clock struck 12 a.m. Jan. 1. She is believed to be the first home birth of 2015 in the province.

Cradling her newborn sleeping daughter, whose blond hair peeked underneath her pink cap, Char Kenemy sported a smile Friday afternoon, even if she was sleep-deprived.

“She’s good. She’s healthy,” replied the mother of her second child. “We had a home birth, which went great.

“I was taken care of by midwives, so I had full confidence in them that they would carry me through till the end, and they did a fabulous job.”

New arrivals to Mitchell, Char, formerly of Landmark, and her husband Kris wanted a home delivery for their first child Aaron, now two-years-old, but there were no midwives available.

There was no shortage this time. Two midwives were by Char’s side for Alaya’s birth, and a third showed up minutes later.

Everything worked out, although Alaya wasn’t expected until Jan. 8.

Kris, 31, said the spotlight of having a new year’s baby wasn’t anticipated either but they appreciate the recognition.

“It’s just cool that other people are celebrating the birth because we’re celebrating it,” he said.
