A 49-year-old male from Ile des Chenes is in critical condition following a two-vehicle collision on the Perimeter Highway on Friday afternoon.

The Ile des Chenes resident was travelling northbound on the Perimeter, one kilometre north of Portage Avenue, when he lost control of the 2014 Peterbilt semi-tractor he was driving at 5:44 p.m.

The semi-tractor had hydroplaned due to the heavy rainfall that had just fallen, striking a car and then rolling two or three times into the eastbound ditch.

The male driver of the semi-tractor was taken to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg where he was listed as critical and was being brought into surgery. He is “expected to survive,” say police. His passenger, a 22-year-old male from Gimli, is in stable condition.

The lone occupant in the vehicle that was struck sustained no injuries.

Two dogs in the semi unit incurred minor injuries and were looked after by emergency animal services.

The police’s investigation is ongoing.
