Ten years after last enlarging its lagoon, the RM of La Broquerie is preparing to turn the tap on another expansion.

The municipality purchased an 8-acre parcel adjacent to the current lagoon in the community of La Broquerie from owner Paul Taillefer earlier this month. The cost was $200,000.

An environmental license must now be attained, a process that can last 6-9 months. The duration of that procedure will determine when construction can start, likely in spring 2016.

At a council meeting Jan. 14, the municipality transferred $200,000 from its accumulated 2014 surplus to put toward the lagoon reserve, which is now at just under $700,000.

The federal and provincial governments have additionally committed $800,000 apiece to a project necessary for further subdivision developments in Manitoba’s fastest growing rural municipality to be approved.

The lagoon expansion is budgeted at $6 million.
