There are no longer any employees based out of the Legumex Walker plant in St Jean Baptiste.

As part of a restructuring process that occurred several months ago, the speciality crop processing and export firm has revised its St Jean plant into a receiving station instead of a processing one.

In its new capacity, the plant will be used primarily during harvest season, handling products from farms and storing them until it needs to be processed, explained a company spokesperson.

“We’ve just transitioned the St Jean facility to focus on being a receiving station. It’s still supported by staff at nearby facilities. We’ve just kind of transitioned how it’s functioning for us,” said Marin Landis.

Employees previously based at the St Jean Baptiste plant now work elsewhere, she said.

Landis would not comment on the number of employees who once worked at the facility or if any of them were let go, but said the company tried its best to find other positions in the company for them.

The company’s head office is in Winnipeg, and there are neighbouring plants in locations like Winkler and Plum Coulee.

Roy Legumex of St Jean Baptiste and Walker Seeds of Tisdale, Sask., merged in 2011 to form Legumex Walker. They own 15 special crop facilities in the three Prairie provinces.
