A credit union boasting more than 42,000 members could only count on some 700 people to cast their ballot this April when a proposed merger was rebuffed.

Access Credit Union hopes the low attendance will be remedied this time around—a second shot at a marriage with Assiniboine Credit Union—now that Access’ bylaw has been amended to permit amalgamation votes in various locations.

Of the eight selected communities, three of them are local: Grunthal, Vita and Morris.

The re-vote will take place Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., with registration in the hour proceeding.

Members can go to the New Horizon Senior Centre in Grunthal, the Vita Ukrainian Hall or the Morris MultiPlex.

Assiniboine members will vote on Sept. 20.

This spring, Assiniboine members overwhelmingly supported the merger—to the tune of 95 percent—but Access’ members were less bullish, falling 25 votes short of the two-thirds majority required.

Access’ reasons for a merger remain the same as it was then, citing the necessity of consolidating in a competitive financial services market.
