The four schools in Lorette temporarily locked their doors Monday afternoon after a suspicious man wearing “soft body armour” was spotted in the community, RCMP confirmed.

A woman took a photograph on her cell phone of a shirtless man in a vest walking on Dawson Road this afternoon. The Seine River School Division was informed, which proceeded to alert police and lock the outside doors of its three schools around 2:30 p.m. today.

The “lockout” was in effect for about a half-hour before RCMP claimed the threat was gone, explained division superintendent Mike Borgfjord. The one Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine school in the community also locked its doors.

GRANT BURR | THE CARILLON St Pierre RCMP patrol in Lorette on Monday afternoon after a suspicious male wearing what was described as a bullet proof vest prompted locals schools into "lockout" mode. RCMP gave schools the go-ahead to reopen around 3 p.m. about a half hour after the incident was reported.

RCMP media spokesperson Tara Seel said after 4 p.m. police have not located the suspect and were “actively searching” for the individual.

She said the police is certain the public is in no danger.

“They don’t feel like there is a threat or they would not have lifted the lockdown,” she said.

RCMP say the man appeared to be a Caucasian in his mid-twenties with short blond hair. He was wearing a black vest.

There have been reports on social media the man was armed with an assault rifle. Police report the individual had no weapons and made no threatening gestures.
