A Steinbach man was flown by STARS air ambulance Saturday after his ATV crashed into a side-by-side quad a few miles east of La Broquerie. There were many machines flying through the rural area as part of a fundraising derby for Steinbach’s Relay for Life event.

“The derby would usually happen in the Sandilands but I guess they weren’t allowed in the forest due to dry conditions,” speculated La Broquerie fire chief Alain Nadeau. “So there were a lot of machines on the trails that were marked, all within the municipality.”

The crash happened at around 3:30 p.m. at a turning point.

JUDY PETERS | THE CARILLON STARS picks up a Steinbach man from an ATV crash Saturday afternoon a few miles east of La Broquerie. The westbound machines were turning south on a trail marked for a fundraising derby.

“It appears the machines were westbound when the side-by-side turned left and was side swiped by the following quad,” said Cst. Kyle Giesbrecht. “The male on the quad was injured and taken by STARS to the Health Sciences Centre.”

The collision is still under investigation. Giesbrecht said it appeared that dusty conditions could have been a factor.

There were no injuries, or possibly minor injuries, to the man and woman in the side-by-side.

A traffic analyst was called in to assist with the investigation.
