A 58-year-old man is dead and a 19-year-old man is in police custody facing charges of criminal negligence causing death, after a fatal collision at the intersection of Highway 52 and Road 40E on Monday.
Emergency crews responded to a report of the crash, about five kilometres east of Steinbach in the RM of La Broquerie, shortly before noon.
Investigators believe the 19-year-old was driving southbound on Road 40E when he failed to stop at the intersection and struck a westbound vehicle driven by the 58-year-old, pushing it into oncoming traffic where the vehicle was struck again by an eastbound pickup truck, driven by a 49-year-old man.
Police said the 58-year-old driver died at the scene. The 19-year-old was transported to hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the eastbound pickup truck was not injured. All three drivers, police said, are from the La Broquerie area.
An investigation continues into the crash. Police said alcohol is not a factor and confirmed that the deceased was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
