Don’t pop the popcorn just yet. Steinbach’s movie theatre is not ready for the red carpet.
Steinbach mayor Chris Goertzen told The Carillon that early 2015 is the new projected premiere for the one-screen theatre complex.
Goertzen said he and city councillors had a tour of the building, which also features the completed curling rink, on Friday.
“My understanding is that obviously there’s a lot of work to be done yet, but we fully expect that by January it should be ready for occupancy, or at least early January,” he said.
Theatre operator Pete Schellenberg said in early October he had hoped the theatre would be completed by the end of November. He expected that after the curling rink was finished last month, he would have a few weeks to install his interior furnishings and prepare for opening.
Steinbach operations manager Paul Penner said he would be able to provide an update on the building’s construction status later this week.
Schellenberg, who previously operated the Keystone Cinema and was offered the chance to lease the new city-owned venue, was not available for comment about the new timeline.
Many of the fixtures from his former cinema will be installed in the new theatre. He has old seating and the old theatre sound system sitting in storage, a value of well over $100,000 in items.
The theatre is part of the $6.7 million first phase of the city’s multiplex project.
