After many Niverville residents experienced serious flooding this summer during rainstorms, one resident came up with a checklist that might be useful in preventing future occurrences.

Peter Hiebert appeared before council Tuesday evening with a list of 12 things residents can do that he feels would be helpful in reducing the chances of future flooding episodes, said councillor Myron Dyck.

“He suggested the list could be put on the town’s website for residents to take preventative measures,” Dyck noted. “Things like ensuring they have a back up valve, that they have a sump pump with the water going to the yard, and cleaning the eaves. He also suggested that landscaping be looked at because the ground often sinks around the foundation, so to make sure that the landscaping is sloped away from the home.”

Council has accepted Hiebert’s list and is forwarding the suggestions to staff who will consider other preventative steps that could be added before the checklist is posted for residents.

“We’re very appreciative of this effort,” Dyck said. “As part of a debrief, council is always looking at what can be learned from a situation like the flooding and we appreciate the time this resident took to come up with the checklist.”
