Water levels are dropping in the Red and Roseau rivers during a fairly uneventful spring in southeastern Manitoba. Flood forecasters report Red River basin flows through North Dakota are low enough that at this time it is unlikely the Red River Floodway gates will be activated this spring.

The gradual spring melt is seen as a key reason for the reduced flood risk.

Even if the Southeast receives a significant snow or rain event, forecasters are confident the rivers and tributaries have enough room to handle the additional water.

The major snow storm in southern Manitoba between Mar. 23 and 24 resulted in about four to six inches of snow or 10 to 15 mm of water. That was not enough to have an impact on water levels in most areas.

The province issued an official updated flood outlook this afternoon.
