Grief counsellors attended the Hanover School Division Learning Center in Steinbach on Friday to offer support to students after the death of a fellow classmate.

Several individuals told The Carillon that a 17-year-old teenage girl died of a drug overdose after using oxycotin on Wednesday night. The prescription painkiller is also known as a deadly recreation drug.

On Friday afternoon, Steinbach RCMP cautioned youth in a press release about a man who was selling or, in some cases, giving away for free, drugs that may prove fatal depending on the dosage. The drug, referred to as ‘oxy,’ ‘blue lightning’ or ‘blue stamps,’ can prove fatal in certain doses, especially when mixed with fentanyl, Steinbach RCMP Staff Sgt. Harold Laninga said.

By Friday evening police said in another release they had a man in custody. His name was not released.

Laninga would not comment on whether the man’s arrest was tied to a fatal overdose but added that more information on the man’s arrest may be forthcoming on Monday.

Story updated to reflect the proper age of the deceased.
