Steinbach RCMP issued a call of their own again on Friday to remind the public to be cautious when receiving phone calls from people claiming they owe money.

Police said in a release on Friday afternoon that some people living in Steinbach and the surrounding area received phone calls from people claiming to be police officers or Revenue Canada agents. Fraudsters will claim money must be and threaten consequences such as arrest by police for tax evasion. Callers typically tell victims to send money via a money order which, once sent, is virtually untraceable.

Anyone who receives such calls is asked to contact police or the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre.
