Election day is finally upon us in southeastern Manitoba.

The possibility of major change is evident around council and board tables throughout the region as some experienced members step aside and new candidates step forward with hopes of capturing a seat.

The city council race in Steinbach has lacked the intrigue of four years ago when the library expansion debate piqued voters’ interests and helped lead 13 individuals to seek election. This year, Ryan Derksen is the lone challenger against six incumbents.

The Hanover School Division race has taken city council’s place as the most intriguing of election battles in Steinbach. Although Bill 18 was seen as the catalyst behind the large field of 11 individuals seeking four seats, that topic has not been at the forefront of most candidates’ talking points.

In the RM of Hanover, Clif Bakx has put forth perhaps the most aggressive election campaign in the Southeast. He has said there’s $1.2 million in efficiencies he would help save if elected. But incumbent Stan Toews has made commitments himself, including the expansion of the municipal road upgrade program and towing the line on taxes.

La Broquerie’s race will be intriguing to keep an eye on. Old guard representatives Cornie Goertzen and Larry Tetrault are up against newcomer Lewis Weiss.

There will be guaranteed change in communities like Niverville where a new face (Myron Dyck or Kerry Church) will become mayor. Same can be said in De Salaberry and Ritchot where Ron Musick and Bob Stefaniuk, respectively, are departing and new heads of council are required. In Tache, either councillor Ross Deschambault or school trustee Robert Rivard will take over from the late William Danylchuk.

One experienced council head will soon be jobless in Emerson-Franklin. Emerson mayor Wayne Arseny or RM of Franklin reeve Greg Janzen are in the running to be the merged municipality’s first reeve.

In the Town of Ste Anne, 13 candidates are vying for four council positions. That’s a stark contrast from four years ago when every seat was won by acclimation. The reeve chair in the RM of Ste Anne sees Art Bergmann against challenger Rolland Sarrasin.

Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. See a full list of voting locations here.
