NHL veteran Mike Richards has been formally charged with possession of a controlled substance after being stopped at the Emerson border crossing in June.

Richards, 30, was arrested and released after being investigated for the June 17 incident. At about 2 p.m. that day Emerson RCMP were informed a controlled substance had been intercepted by Emerson Canada Border Services Agency officers.

Richards was formally charged on Tuesday. He is to appear in Emerson Provincial Court on Sept. 10.

The Los Angeles Kings terminated Richards contract following his initial arrest in June. Richards, who is from Kenora, had played with the club since 2011.
