A young man from Rosenort drowned at St Malo Provincial Park on Saturday.

Calvin Dueck, 19, was swimming with friends when he died, a spokesperson from the Winkler Flyers confirmed to The Carillon Sunday morning.

St Pierre RCMP, along with local emergency services, went to the beach at 4:15 p.m. after a report of a possible drowning. The male was removed from the water and transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead, explains RCMP, who said the male came “under distress while swimming.”

Dueck graduated from Rosenort School in 2013. He was a prospect of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Winkler Flyers and played baseball with the Altona Bisons of the Manitoba Junior Baseball League.

Dueck is survived by his father, RM of Morris councillor Mervin Dueck, mother Susan, three brothers and one sister.

A STARS air ambulance was dispatched to the scene at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, but they were redirected to Steinbach because the patient was being transported by ground ambulance, a STARS spokesman confirmed to the Free Press.

The RCMP are continuing their investigation.

The last drowning at St Malo’s unsupervised beach happened in July 2009 when a two-year-old boy from Kleefeld died. The toddler had been with playing with other children at a nearby campsite before he wandered off unnoticed.
