It was in 2001 when the Steinbach Credit Union signed its first lease to move some employees apart from its headquarters—a six-month term that would cease once renovation work at their building was completed.

That lease, and various others eventually scattered throughout Steinbach would be resigned, seemingly in perpetuity, as the growing financial institution became too big for its means.

Now the gang is finally back together, and upwards of 250 people, from fellow employees to dignitaries and SCU’s members, marked the occasion with a standing-room only grand opening Saturday morning for the new six-storey complex.

“Fourteen years after signing that first six-month lease we are all together again under one roof in downtown Steinbach, absolutely fabulous,” said chief executive officer Glenn Friesen.

He said it was a year after he arrived in 1998 when space concerns became an issue, with work spaces shrinking and some employees settling into the hallways.

“We introduced hallway banking,” Friesen said to laughs.

Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen said the new facility is a peek into the city’s future.

“Someday this building won’t dominate the skyline of Steinbach, it will blend into the skyline of Steinbach.”

The 103,000 sq. ft. building encompasses some 265 Steinbach-based staff. The cooperative also boasts two Winnipeg locations, a 42,000 sq. ft. location on Lagimodiere and 35,000 sq. ft. in Linden Ridge.
