The Hanover School Division has been given the keys to a sprawling new expansion for its biggest school.
The Steinbach Regional Secondary School will become the largest high school in Manitoba when it opens its 105,000 sq. ft. wing this summer. It will not be the province’s most populous, though: that’s a title belonging to other Winnipeg schools like Sisler High—for now, at least.
In the immediate short-term, contractors still have some loose ends to complete in the interior and grounds surrounding the school. Furnishings and other items need to be brought inside the expansion in the coming weeks.
During a media tour, HSD superintendent Randy Dueck showed off the open-concept area where the new gym and neighbouring multi-purpose room will be. Slide away the retractable walls and the two rooms become one large space, similar to the ‘town square’ located in the new Clearspring Middle School, except without the bleachers.
Other amenities of the expansion include more than 20 additional classrooms. There will be four science labs, a space for a daycare and the cosmetics vocation, as well as an outdoor learning space. A cafeteria will be staffed by culinary students and a new paved basketball court and beach volleyball court will be located in between the bus loop to be constructed south of the school expansion. In the southeast corner of the SRSS’ preexisting campus will be the new running track expected to be built next summer.
The new school wing will predominantly house Grade 9 students, a grade level to be welcomed into the SRSS community for the first time. This fall’s batch of Grade 10 students will split their time in either end of the 308,000 sq. ft. school.
