Icy roads are said to be a contributing factor after a head-on collision involving a northbound car and a southbound half-ton truck Thursday night southeast of Sarto.

The female driver of the car, a 30-year-old resident of La Broquerie, had to be extricated from her vehicle with the jaws of life before STARS could airlift her to hospital. The male driver of the truck, a 26-year-old resident of the RM of Piney, was driven to Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach.

RCMP said the southbound truck slid into the northbound lane and collided with the car. Icy roads appear to have been a factor in the crash.

Grunthal fire chief Paul Wiebe said injuries to both are serious but do not appear to be life-threatening.

A mile stretch of Highway 12 was closed for almost three hours after the collision occurred around 10 p.m., about a quarter-mile south of Provincial Road 205.

Correction: An earlier version of this story included the wrong highway number.

Update (11:05 a.m.): Story now includes the age and residency of the two drivers. New information from the RCMP on what caused the crash has also been included.

On January 22, 2015, at about 10:00 pm, Steinbach RCMP and local emergency services responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 12, approximately nine miles south of Steinbach, Manitoba.

Investigation revealed a southbound pickup truck, driven by a 26-year-old male from the RM of Piney, Manitoba, slid into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a northbound car driven by a 30-year-old female from La Broquerie.

Both drivers were taken to hospital in stable condition.

Alcohol was not a factor and both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Road conditions were very icy at the time and appear to be a factor in the collision.

Highway 12 was closed for two kilometres south from Provincial Road 205 for a short time so that emergency services crews could work at the collision scene. The area has since been reopened for traffic.

RCMP would like to remind the public when driving in winter that the posted limit is for ideal road conditions. If you must travel during bad or changing weather, slow down and drive with caution.
