Provencher MP Ted Falk couldn’t help but be pleased with the results of the Conservative Party leadership race.

On Saturday night, Saskatchewan MP Andrew Scheer, who Falk has supported from early in his leadership run, emerged victorious as the new leader of the Conservative Party, narrowly defeating Maxime Bernier with 50.95 percent of the vote.

“I would like to congratulate the new leader of the Conservative Party and the next Prime Minister of Canada, Andrew Scheer,” said Falk in a release on Sunday.

“This marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the Conservative party. We come out of this leadership campaign united and ready to defeat Justin Trudeau and the Liberals in 2019.”

Falk noted his early support for Scheer and credited the former House of Commons speaker with being able to grow that support further.

“I was proud to be an early supporter of Andrew when he first announced his leadership bid last September. Since then he has earned the respect and admiration of our caucus, supporters, and Canadians from across the country.”

A total of 13 ballots were needed to reach a final result in tightly contested contest. In Provencher, Scheer led throughout the ranked ballot process, which also showed solid local support for Bernier and Pierre Lemieux.
