Electronic cigarettes are raising eyebrows these days with councils and school boards.

Steinbach city council has asked administration to report back with recommendations regarding the use of e-cigarettes in city buildings earlier this month. Now, Seine River School Division is amending its drug use and abuse policy to include e-cigarettes.

“We have a substance abuse policy in place but it doesn’t touch on e-cigarettes,” said trustee Gary Nelson. “We did some research and found that in all of our schools, using e-cigarettes is not allowed, but it’s not supported by policy.”

Schools have been clear with students that e-cigarettes are not acceptable devices to use in school or on school outings, Nelson added.

The board is adjusting the policy to include all smoking devices. The revised policy is now being shared with schools and parent advisory committees for review and feedback.

The updates are expected to be brought to trustees for approval later in spring.
