After choosing to absorb the costs of most school fees this fall, the Seine River School Division is considering another measure to ease the financial strain on parents and guardians.

Long-time trustee Wendy Bloomfield suggested the school division look into the vast differences between school supply lists offered by different teachers and schools and consider a more equitable solution.

It was mentioned at the board meeting last week Tuesday the cost of purchasing every item on a school supply list can range from $30-$90.

Bloomfield’s proposal received support from trustees, who affirmed that a standardized list would be preferable, as some teachers request superfluous items that may not be necessary.

The trustees formally asked school administrators to bring back possible options for consideration in the months to come, such as whether the division should buy school supplies in bulk and then ask parents to pay the amount for their children, or perhaps offering the same supply list to all students, which trustees Wes Keating and Gary Nelson mentioned should be an appropriate first step.
