The Town of Niverville’s sidewalk renewal plan is moving into phase two now that council has awarded the project’s contract to a local construction company.

Armada Construction, a Niverville company, will upgrade the town sidewalks for $78,000.

Mayor Myron Dyck said the town wanted to upgrade the sidewalks for safety reasons.

The contractors will remove the current paving stones, which Dyck said have become a hazard due to freezing and thawing, and replace them with concrete. The project also puts concrete right to the curb, eliminating grass boulevards to make them more maintenance friendly, Dyck said.

Dyck said council’s plan is to fix the sidewalks at a pace of one or two blocks per year until all sidewalks along Main Street have been upgraded.

Dyck adds the phase one of the project occurred in 2015, when the sidewalks around the MCC Thrift Store were renewed. Nothing was done on the project last year, due to Niverville’s water main project.

Phase two includes two blocks, the block around the Red River Co-op and the block around Niverville’s town office, to make up for missing a block last year.
