Niverville town council has had to make some adjustments to accommodate volumes of household waste in the community. Problems arose this year after council decided to limit residents to one garbage bag a week. That was seen as one way of saving taxpayers a few dollars.

In March, the town decided to cut down on the amount of trash taken to the curb after it had received notice that garbage disposal fees were going up. That would have resulted in a $30 increase per household.

“The Ritchot landfill has ceased to allow Niverville residents to haul their garbage to the site as of the start of the 2015,” explained councilor Kevin Stott.

On paper, it may sound like a good idea, especially since this type of action has been taken by other communities across Canada. While many houses are able to stick within the one-bag rule, there are times when that cannot be attained.

“When people do minor renovations or spring cleaning, home repairs, and they need a place to bring shingles or whatever it is, we are now supplying a place for them to take that waste,” reported Stott. “When we made the change to only one garbage bag a week, the (landfill in Ritchot) was overwhelmed with Niverville residents hauling their trash to the site.”

Council has approved an agreement with Bristal Hauling for residents to bring their waste to the site on Sixth Avenue South on Saturday’s from 8 a.m. until noon. This will begin on the first Saturday of 2015. Stott, and the rest of council, believe this is a good solution.
