While the country mourns the loss of an RCMP officer killed in the line of duty, the death of Cst. David Wynn has really hit the policing community in many ways.

These are only some of the similarities that make it exceptionally difficult to comprehend the tragedy that took place on Jan. 17 in St. Albert, Alberta. David and Aux. Cst. Derek Bond were both shot at close range while arresting a suspect about a stolen car at the Apex Casino.

Both officers were taken to hospital with severe injuries. Bond was released later that night while his partner never regained consciousness. David died on Jan. 21.

Steinbach RCMP Cst. Kevin Wynn attended the Regimental Funeral on Monday afternoon in the Edmonton area. While Kevin said he not aware of any close relation to the fallen officer, he cannot help but look at the many similarities between them.

“Same number of kids, we both have a son in cadets, both in our 40s, and both instructors of the DARE program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education),” Kevin told The Carillon.

“A lot of kids will never forget their DARE officer. That police officer spent 10 days in their classroom and it’s a great relationship-building program. It’s a good program and the information the students receive is something they can use for a lifetime in helping them make good choices,” he said.
