With city approval, the puck will drop on the Allan Cup’s return to Steinbach in 2016.

Hockey Manitoba, which was awarded the annual tournament featuring the country’s top senior teams for 2016, has offered the hosting opportunity to the local South East Prairie Thunder. The team’s choice is Steinbach, the same venue that hosted the successful 2009 tournament.

Prairie Thunder representative Jared Driedger made the team’s case at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Driedger made no funding request yet. He only wanted the city’s endorsement and their commitment that they would have ice available at Centennial Arena in the second week of April 2016. Driedger also requested the city consider keeping its second ice surface operational for the tournament.

Steinbach city manager Troy Warkentin said he would need to speak with parks and recreation staff to ensure this would be possible. Steinbach mayor Chris Goertzen wondered if council approval would even be required if recreation staff approved the Prairie Thunder’s suggestion but Warkentin replied that he was unsure and would have to examine how Steinbach approved the 2009 tournament.

Goertzen said the city would have an answer for Driedger by the next council meeting in early September.

Council kept mum on whether or not they supported the Prairie Thunder’s bid, but councillor John Fehr commended Driedger on the high-calibre play the team has provided local hockey fans.
