The renewal of the pedestrian sidewalks on Steinbach’s main drag is expected to be completed later this week.

Public Works department head Randy Reimer said the $70,000 rehabilitation project is meant to revive the corner curbs and ramps that has been degrading over the years since Main Street was rebuilt in the mid-1990s.

As part of the renovation, yellow tactile tiles are installed at the bottom of each ramp to help the visually impaired navigate the corner.

The five intersections that have been remodeled along Main Street this past month are Friesen, Reimer, Lumber, Barkman and Kroeker avenues.

Reimer said the city is expecting to renovate the concrete bands etched into the pavement to mark the crosswalks next year. He said some of the crossings are starting to deteriorate as the concrete breaks away.
