Two drivers who accelerated through Steinbach’s busiest highways to street race received fines at the city’s traffic court Wednesday.

Brandon Peters, 19, from Mitchell was ordered to pay $3,000 for speeding through Main Street in Steinbach on Aug. 11, 2014 around 2:30 p.m.

Steinbach RCMP Cst. Kyle Jeffrey said he was on foot patrol when he noticed two drivers with a stretch of open pavement barrelling down in excess of the 50 km/h speed limit.

The judge was forceful while sentencing.

“An example needs to be set that this needs to stop,” Jeffrey recalled of the judge’s comments.

Another male from the RM of Hanover, a youth at the time of the offence, received a $800 fine for cruising through Brandt Street in Steinbach on Aug. 25, 2014 around 9 p.m.

The two males were convicted of street racing, a violation of the Highway Traffic Act. Each of the accused was racing against another driver, whose matter has not been resolved.

A co-accused in the Aug. 25 matter received a $500 fine a few months ago.

Individuals convicted of speed racing also face a driving probation. The length of that term is determined by Manitoba Public Insurance.
