It has been a new venue for Steinbach’s Relay for Life this year but that same positive energy hasn’t gone anywhere.

The Mennonite Heritage Village became the host for the 12th annual event featuring dozens of teams and many more people walking a path through the museum grounds Friday night in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The hardiest of souls will continue into the early morning Saturday.

A total of 137 yellow-shirted cancer survivors—including one who is 100 years old—took a victory lap, joined on their walk afterwards by family and friends.

The traditional balloon release by survivors, recognizing those who are fighting and have fought cancer, was replaced this year by the blowing of bubbles because it is more eco-friendly, the organizers said.
