Steinbach firefighters were called to Grace Mennonite Church on Saturday night around 6:15 p.m. after a fire was seen on the rooftop of the building.

Neighbours say smoke could be seen rising from the west side of the church. One witness said a group of young people were seen on the roof lighting a recycling container ablaze using a jerry can of gasoline.

The can could still be seen sitting in the Southwood School field next to the church. Steinbach RCMP were expected to fingerprint the evidence left on the scene as part of their investigation.

The building appears to have avoided any major damage.
