Councillors in the RM of Tache did not receive the verdict they were hoping for regarding a federal grant application intended to assist its forthcoming Centre of Canada signage along the Trans-Canada Highway.

At their most recent meeting, councillors were informed by CAO Christine Hutlet that their Canada 150 grant application was unsuccessful. A high volume of applications and a very competitive selection process resulted in the application not being selected, a letter from the Department of Canadian Heritage stated.

Tache mayor Robert Rivard said councillors were not crestfallen by the news.

“We weren’t upset because we weren’t expecting to get it, we were just hoping to get it,” Rivard said. He clarified that the funding for the Centre of Canada project is coming from a fundraising committee, not the municipality.

“They’re just going to have to do a little more fundraising. They still plan to follow through with the start of the park and get things going this summer,” he said, adding that the committee will use other funds for the signage.

Installation of the highway signage has been delayed slightly while the municipality gets a permit from Manitoba Infrastructure, Rivard said.

“It’s still going forward,” he said.
